Connecticut Online Casino & Sports Betting Apps

When will CT Online Casino & Sportsbooks launch?

In May 2021, Connecticut lawmakers legalized online casinos and online sports betting in the state. However, betting apps won’t launch until the fall. If all goes smoothly, Connecticut bettors can play at online casinos and sportsbooks as soon as September 2021.

You can look forward to three online sportsbooks and two online casinos by the end of the year as well as an online lottery.

In the meantime, you can still bet online in Connecticut. Online horse race betting, daily fantasy sports (DFS), sweepstakes casinos, and sweepstakes poker sites are all valid outlets to win money.

Overview Of Online Gambling In Connecticut

On May 25, 2021, the Connecticut State Senate passed House Bill 6451, an agreement between the state, the Mohegan Tribe, and the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation that legalizes online betting. Governor Ned Lamont then signed the bill and sent it out for federal approval, which is expected to go smoothly.

Assuming no further amendments are made, this is the landscape of online gambling in Connecticut:

  • Two online casinos, each partnered with a tribal casino (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun)
  • Three online sportsbooks, each partnered with a tribal casino as well as the Connecticut Lottery
  • Operators must pay an 18% tax on online casino gaming (increased to 20% after five years)
  • Operators must pay a 13.75% tax on sports betting and fantasy sports.

Budget estimates put the initial tax revenue (between July 2021 to December 2021) at $28 million.

What About Connecticut Online Poker?

Multiplayer online poker is not specified in the bill that legalized online gambling in Connecticut. While it does contain the word “poker,” the context seems to be specifically around casino poker, like Caribbean Poker or Casino Hold’em, which pits the player against the house.

Typically, “online poker” refers to player vs. player sites like PokerStars and WSOP.com. In other states that legalized online casinos, sports betting, and poker sites, each type of gambling was in its own category – and came with separate rules, taxes, and regulations. Due to the fact that online casinos are separate from sports betting in the Connecticut online gambling bill, it leads us to believe that multiplayer poker is not in the cards.

However, it doesn’t seem like much of a jump to go from legalizing online casinos and sportsbooks to legalizing online poker.

Further, other sites are reporting that Connecticut is indeed getting online poker. While we believe that the bill does not authorize multiplayer poker sites, we also admit that it’s possible. We shall see once Connecticut online gambling officially launches.

How Can You Bet Online In Connecticut Right Now?

All this talk about having access to two online casinos and three sports betting apps probably has you jonesing to get betting. We’re right with you on that. Fortunately, there are some legal ways to win money online that you can enjoy today:

  • Sweepstakes Casinos: Players have access to a wide range of slots and table games at sites like Chumba Casino and Luckyland Slots, where they can win Sweeps Coins to exchange for cash prizes or gift cards.
  • Sweepstakes Poker Sites: Players compete against thousands of others at Global Poker, where won Sweeps Coins can be exchanged for cash prizes and gift cards.

Betting On Horse Racing In Connecticut

You can bet on horse racing in Connecticut by visiting one of several off-track betting (OTB) facilities in the state, such as Winners Hartford. But you can also save yourself the trip by betting online.

The top-rated online horse race betting sites in Connecticut include:

  • TVG
  • TwinSpires
  • NYRA Bets

Each outlet offers some form of a welcome bonus for new members. You can also just deposit, place your bets, and cash out. The sites take bets on races happening all across the country and around the world. For example, NYRA Bets has races from over 150 tracks every day. You can live stream directly from the website or app as well.

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) In Connecticut

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) are legal to play in the State of Connecticut. These are some of the top DFS platforms:

  • DraftKings DFS
  • FanDuel DFS
  • Monkey Knife Fight
  • SuperDraft
  • PrizePicks

DFS is relatively simple to play, but it requires some skill to see regular success. You create a virtual roster of professional athletes. Each athlete is assigned a salary value, and you have to create your roster within a total salary cap. You then enter that team into tournaments and score points based on your athletes’ performances.

The players in the tournaments with the most points within the given timeframe (usually one to seven days) receive cash prizes.

Cash prizes from DFS tournaments can range from one dollar to hundreds of thousands depending on the number of participants. FanDuel DFS and DraftKings DFS offer the biggest prize pools but also the steepest competition.

Sweepstakes Casinos In Connecticut

Also known as social casinos, sweepstakes casinos are a legal way to play games for cash prizes or gift cards. You’re not playing for entries into random prize drawings. The better you do on a slot or table game, the more Sweeps Coins you win. The more Sweeps Coins you win, the bigger your cash prize or gift card.

Best of all, you do not need to purchase coins to play. You can even mail in a request for free Sweeps Coins, and participate in daily social media contests for even more.

You also have the option to simply play the games using Gold Coins, which have no value whatsoever. Playing with Gold Coins is a lot like playing a casino game in demo practice mode at a real-money online casino.

Here are the three main sweepstakes casinos, their welcome bonuses, and some notable features:

Social CasinoWelcome BonusFeatures
Chumba Casino2 free Sweeps CoinsMillion-dollar progressive jackpots; huge slot variety; multiple table games; 1 Sweeps Coin for free every day that you log in.
Luckyland Slots10 free Sweeps CoinsNice selection of exclusive slots; digital scratch-offs; 0.3 Sweeps Coins every day you log in
Funzpoints$2.50 in premium playUnique structure that offers both Funzpoints (Sweeps Coins) play for cash prizes as well as standard play for random prize drawings.

If you’re a fan of casino games, we think there’s a high likelihood that you’ll like sweepstakes casinos. They’re an underrated, completely legal outlet that offers straightforward and fair ways to win cash prizes.

If you run out of Sweeps Coins, you can wait until the next day to receive more or purchase packages of Gold Coins, which come with Sweeps Coins. For example, the $10 Gold Coins package at Chumba Casino includes 10 Sweeps Coins.

Sweepstakes Poker

Sweepstakes poker is legal in 49 states and D.C. The State of Washington is the only state that considers the game illegal. That means you compete against a massive pool of players.

The main sweepstakes poker site is Global Poker, where you can find free play games with Gold Coins or play for cash prizes and gift cards with Sweeps Coins. It’s the same situation as Chumba Casino, except you’re playing multiplayer poker.

The Global Poker setup will be familiar to anyone who’s played online poker in the past. It’s structured just like a real-money poker site, with ring games, tournaments, and sit ‘n’ go. You can play Texas Hold’em, Omaha, or Crazy Pineapple. Buy-ins range from 0.01 Sweeps Coins to 50 Sweeps Coins or more.

Due to the variety of skill levels and budgets, Global Poker is ideal for both highly experienced poker players and newcomers alike, especially because it’s free to play. New members receive 20 Sweeps Coins just for verifying their account, and another 20 Sweeps Coins is discounted to $10 per Gold Coins package.

Online Lottery In Connecticut

The Connecticut Lottery will offer online ticket sales alongside the launch of online casinos and sportsbooks. The online lottery is part of the bill that legalized online gambling in the state.

When the Connecticut Lottery launches its online version, anyone over 18 and located in the state will be able to purchase Mega Millions, Powerball, and other lottery tickets directly from the site.

Online lotteries don’t send you a ticket after purchase. Everything is done online. For example, you can buy three Mega Millions tickets, select your numbers, and check your results, all from the website or app.

However, you will still need to visit the Connecticut Lottery Headquarters in the Hartford area for prizes of $50,000 or more. All other prizes will either be collectible online or by mail depending on the amount.

In the meantime, you can play the Connecticut Lottery at any licensed retailer. You can find the one nearest you via the “Where to Play” section of its website.

How Will Connecticut Online Gambling Compare To Neighboring States?

Connecticut borders the states of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York. Once Connecticut launches three online sports betting apps and two online casinos, the state will have more online betting options than any of its neighbors.

  • Rhode Island Online Gambling: The single, lottery-run online sportsbook offers mediocre odds but a decent market depth. Anyone 18 and up and physically located in the state of Rhode Island can bet via SportsBetRhodeIsland.com.
  • Massachusetts Online Gambling: Massachusetts hasn’t legalized any form of online betting yet, but online sports betting is on the horizon for 2021 or 2022.
  • New York Online Gambling: New York will soon launch two online sports betting operators, each of which can launch an additional four skins (betting platforms). The operators will share up to 50% of its revenue with the state, which means New York State may have an uncompetitive online sports betting market.

Connecticut comes out ahead compared to its border states. But nearby New Jersey and Pennsylvania both have massive online gambling markets. Both boast over a dozen online casinos and online sportsbooks, and both have online poker as well.

However, because Connecticut’s online casinos and sportsbooks will be private companies that simply have to pay taxes (like any other business), the platforms should offer betting odds and game variety on par with most New Jersey and Pennsylvania sites.
