The Chicago Cubs and DraftKings Inc. have announced that they have partnered up to place DraftKings as the official daily fantasy and sports betting partner for this favorite major league baseball team. The deal runs through multiple years and involves a proposal to offer an innovative sportsbook at Wrigley Field, with electronic access obtainable in the nearby Wrigleyville area. For sports fans in Illinois, this joint venture will offer one of the finest entertainment experiences. While sports betting is legal now in the state, the new advancement of a retail sportsbook will need to be approved by the City of Chicago.
“DraftKings has been a great partner for a number of years and we are excited to expand this relationship as sports betting grows rapidly in Illinois,” said Crane Kenney, President of Business Operations for the Chicago Cubs. “An increasing number of sports fans want to integrate sports betting into their game experience, and we’re excited to be one of the first to engage in developing a retail sportsbook at a professional sports venue.”
The Cubs franchise has been around since 1876, and the team has won the National League pennant 17 times. It’s also known for winning the World Series two times in a row in 1907 and 1908. The Cubs’ most recent World Series victory occurred in 2018 after 108 years to end the longest North American championship drought to date. Wrigley Field has been home to the Cubs since 1916 and is the second oldest baseball park in Major League Baseball.
Matt Kalish, President and Co-Founder of DraftKings Sportsbook, said, “This is truly a historic moment, as we are thrilled to align with the renowned Chicago Cubs franchise and iconic Wrigley Field to provide sports bettors in Chicago with a revolutionary sports betting experience. As two organizations that share a mutual passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we look forward to working in collaboration with the Cubs, an organization steeped in tradition, and making out presence felt in and around Wrigleyville.”
DraftKings already operates retail sportsbooks in seven different states, including Illinois at Casino Queen in East St. Louis. Based on Governor J.B. Pritzker’s Executive Order 2020-41, mobile and online sportsbook registration is available throughout the state up until September 19, 2020. Fans can get access to the DraftKings Fantasy Sports and Sportsbook apps by downloading them on iOS or Android.
