Designed for fans of role playing games, fantasy and Game of Thrones, Dragon Born features multiplying full reel wilds, free spins and Big Time Gaming’s signature Megaways. Dragons, warriors, gems and royalty fill every spin while mountains, valleys and rivers surround the action.
It’s an easy learn for gamers who have played other Megaways slots by Big Time Gaming. Players new to this style can find plenty of guidance in the information screens. Dragon Born is available in free and paid modes on desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
Like Starquest, Dragon Born forgoes paylines for Megaways. Each of the six reels holds between one and seven symbols, depending on the size of the icons. The smallest icons fit seven per reel, while others fit five, three, two or one per reel. Larger symbols offer the potential of bigger payouts, but wins are scarcer. Smaller symbols result in lower, but more frequent, wins.
In this setup, each possible winning combination on a spin is called a Megaway. The maximum number of Megaways, 117,649, occurs when seven symbols land on each of the six reels.
To counter its complex look, Dragon Born keeps its gaming controls uncomplicated. Because there are no paylines, the bet is simply set between 0.20 and 10.00 using the “Stake” arrows. The play icon starts individual spins, while the repeat icon customizes up to 100 automatic plays.
The three-bar menu button pulls up gameplay information. Here the player can review symbols and payouts, as well as explanations for all of the game’s features.
Playing card values are the most frequent, and lowest paying, icons. When they are small, they’re simply 9 through A. But their large versions include images of queens, kings, warriors and chalices. The next most valuable symbol is a green tapestry. Blue and Red jewels pay even more, while the Dragon serves as the most valuable standard symbol.
Megaways wins occur when three or more matching symbols appear on adjacent reels, from left to right, beginning at the first reel. The Dragon icon also pays out for two symbols.
The regular game’s wild joker symbol fills an entire reel, standing in for up to seven standard symbols in a winning Megaway. Many of the joker wilds include multipliers between 2x and 7x. When two of these full reel wilds land on one spin, the multiplier values are multiplied.
A maximum of two full reel wilds occur on a spin, and they are only loaded on reels two through six.
A Diamond symbol serves as the game’s scatter. When three or more Diamonds show up anywhere on the reels, the Diamond Scatter Free Spins game begins.
The Free Spin game is locked at seven small symbols for each of the six reels, offering all 117,649 Megaways. The full reel wilds are replaced with single and stacked wild symbols. An additional free spin is rewarded for each diamond symbol that lands during this game.
The full reel wilds and Diamond Scatter Free Spins not only heighten the excitement, but they’re necessary for the game to maintain any replay value. The standard symbol payouts are extremely low, often one-tenth of the stake, and take away from the experience.
During the 300 test spins run for this review, only 9% of spins resulted in wins larger than the stake; the majority of these required the wilds or free spins. Only 1% of the spins resulted in wins ten times the total bet. This resulted in one of the lowest returns I’ve experienced in a video slot.
Because of this issue, testing out Dragon Born in its free mode is highly recommended before one commits to the paid version.
