Maryland Online Sports Betting

While Maryland online sports betting is officially legal, the first Maryland sports betting apps won’t launch until the fall. But you can expect several different options available to adults over 21 years old physically located within Maryland state lines.

When online sports betting does launch, Maryland has the potential to offer more online sportsbooks than any other state. Lawmakers approved up to 30 retail sportsbooks as well as 60 online sports betting licenses. Sports gaming operators apply and go through a review process with the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) and Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC).

Maryland Online Sports Betting Guide

While online sports betting operators have not received licenses to operate in Maryland, we have a good sense of the initial sportsbook landscape in the state.

Here is the list of future sports betting apps, which we will update as more news breaks:

DraftKings Sportsbook (Baltimore Ravens)

  • Bonus: 20% deposit match up to $1,000, $50 free bet w/ $5 deposit
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: Caesars Sportsbook combines the brand recognition of Caesars Las Vegas with the sports betting quality of William Hill to create a phenomenal online experience.

DraftKings doesn’t have a connection to an official retail location yet, but they do have a partnership with an NFL franchise. Select Baltimore Ravens official media and the stadium where they play will feature DraftKings branding throughout. The gaming operator also already has a presence in the state with its daily fantasy sports platform.

BetMGM (MGM National Harbor)

  • Bonus: Risk-free bet up to $1,000
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: BetMGM lives up to the brand recognition of MGM to provide a highly competitive sports betting platform, including odds that often beat out all competitors.

BetMGM will launch an online sports betting app through MGM National Harbor, which is located just outside of Washington, D.C. BetMGM also announced a partnership with the Baltimore Ravens, the first for the Ravens franchise.

BetMGM has one of the highest ratings in the App Store and it’s available in Google Play for Android devices. Some of the most notable features include the following:

  • Risk-free bet welcome bonus up to $1,000
  • Easy Parlay function with boosted odds
  • Extremely competitive futures odds
  • Live streaming on select events

BetMGM members will be able to deposit and withdraw in cash at the MGM National Harbor casino cage as well.

Caesars Sportsbook (Horseshoe Casino Baltimore)

  • Bonus: Risk-free bet up to $5,000
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: Caesars Sportsbook combines the brand recognition of Caesars Las Vegas with the sports betting quality of William Hill to create a phenomenal online experience.

Caesars Entertainment recently acquired William Hill in its entirety and has folded the two sports betting apps into one platform. That means the William Hill apps in states like Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania became Caesars Sportsbook. Maryland sports bettors will skip all the rebranding confusion and have access to Caesars Sportsbook immediately.

Caesars Entertainment owns Horseshoe Casinos, so the brand will definitely be one of the first sports betting apps in Maryland thanks to the existence of Horseshoe Casino Baltimore.

FanDuel Sportsbook (Live! Casino & Hotel)

  • Bonus: Risk-free bet up to $1,000
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: The FanDuel Sportsbook is hailed for its powerful platform, highly competitive odds, and a wide variety of bonus offers.

FanDuel Sportsbook announced a partnership with Live! Casino & Hotel at Arundel Mills to launch a sports betting app in the state.

FanDuel Sportsbook is available in most states with legal online sports betting. You can also use the same login for both FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel DFS.

Barstool Sportsbook (Hollywood Casino Perryville)

  • Bonus: Risk-free bet up to $1,000
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: Barstool Sportsbook embraces its unique brand personalities to create an immersive experience for sports bettors who like Barstool’s coverage and analyses.

Penn National Gaming, which owns Barstool Sportsbook, bought Hollywood Casino Perryville in late 2020. That puts them in a position to immediately launch Barstool Sportsbook once Maryland online sports betting gets the green light.

Barstool Sportsbook is a relatively new sports betting platform, but it’s a popular choice in states like Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania given its exclusive odds boosters, promos, and the brand’s unique personality.

TwinSpires Sportsbook (Ocean Downs)

  • Bonus: Risk-free bet up to $1,000
  • App: iOS, Android, Web Browser
  • Projected Launch: Fall 2021
  • Why We Like The App: TwinSpires Sportsbook is a new and exciting online sportsbook offering a range of markets and promotions alongside plenty of room to grow.

TwinSpires, formerly BetAmerica, is also a relatively new online sportsbook that’s currently available in Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. But many Maryland bettors know it already for its horse race betting platform, which has been around for years.

Churchill Downs Inc. owns both TwinSpires and Ocean Downs Casino in Ocean City, which means it has immediate access to the Maryland sports betting market.

Other Online Sportsbooks

The following online sportsbooks haven’t announced partnerships with retail locations but will launch in Maryland at some point. These are operators that are always among the first to launch in states that legalize online sports betting:

How Maryland Legalized Online Sports Betting

On November 3, 2020, two-thirds of Maryland voters said yes to Question 2, the Sports Betting Measure, which effectively legalized sports betting in the state via a referendum.

Maryland lawmakers then unanimously approved House Bill 940 on April 12, 2021, which does the following:

  • Authorizes online sports betting.
  • Requires daily fantasy sports (DFS) operators to register with the State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission.
  • Allows the Gaming Control Commission to accept fees for registering and licensing sports betting operators.
  • Establishes an assistance fund for small, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses looking to enter the sports betting market.
  • Other regulatory and licensing details regarding online sports betting in the state.

HB 940 has gone into effect since June 1, 2021. A list of regulations was approved in the summer and published in the Maryland Register in late August. After a 30-day mandatory public speaking period, further approval is required before sports betting goes live. After public comments are reviewed by the MLGCC, final regulations will be published in the register on October 22.

Maryland Sports Betting Compared To Other States

Maryland hasn’t yet had a chance to prove itself as a top-tier sports betting destination. But it’s about to launch with up to 60 different online sports betting platforms, which would be by far the most options in the country.

It’s also going to get a lot of Washington, DC, sports bettors. This is because DC regulations limit betting to a few blocks from stadiums or via the GambetDC app, which has some of the worst odds we’ve ever seen.

However, Pennsylvania and West Virginia both legalized online sports betting as well as online casino gaming and poker sites. Maryland only legalized sports betting. That means PA and WV have a more robust online gambling market than Maryland – unless the Old Line State broadens its offerings in the future.

Nearby Virginia also launched online betting in early 2021, with a variety of apps. But, once Maryland launches, it’s unlikely residents will cross the border to Virginia with so many options available in state.

PointsBet stakeholders have asked for a mass launch date for the state of Maryland. This means all gaming operators that have received their sports betting license would open their sportsbooks at the same time. This is similar to how the state of Arizona recently launched their sports betting activities. PointsBet has a partnership with Riverboat on the Potomac.

It’s up to lawmakers and voters alike. But in the meantime, Maryland is set to become one of the most exciting new sports betting markets in the country.

However, you can play and win money online in a few other ways in Maryland:

  • Sweepstakes Casinos: Play casino games with Sweeps Coins that you can exchange for cash prizes and gift cards.
  • Sweepstakes Poker Sites: Compete against other online poker players using Sweeps Coins that can be exchanged for cash prizes and gift cards.
  • Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS): Create teams within a salary cap and compete against other players for cash prizes.
  • Horse Race Betting: Bet real money on horse racing, just like at an online sportsbook, at sites like TVG, NYRA Bets, and TwinSpires.
  • Online Lottery: Purchase tickets only directly through the Maryland Lottery website.

Other Online Betting Options In Maryland

Sweepstakes Casino In Maryland

Sweepstakes online casinos present popular casino games that allow you to play and win cash prizes. These platforms don’t use cash as the currency for the games, but they do offer the chance to win sweepstakes credits that can be redeemed for cash prizes.

Funzpoints

Funzpoints’ sweepstakes casino model is consistent across the board.

At Funzpoints, instead of changing from Gold Coins or Sweep Coins, you change from “Standard” to “Premium.” In Premium mode, you’re playing the games with coins that can be directly exchanged for a cash prize. In Standard, you play games strictly for fun.

However, Gold Coins can’t bring you any sort of winnings other than more Gold Coins. At Funzpoints, Standard mode can get you into random prize drawings. The more you win, the more entries you have for giveaways.

Remember, sweepstakes casinos are not usually structured like a giveaway promotion. At Funzpoints, winning certain coins means you can exchange them directly for a cash prize, the size of which relies on how many Funzpoints you’ve won.

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) In Maryland

DFS is popular in Maryland with companies such as DraftKings, FanDuel, and Monkey Knife Fight offering customers numerous ways to take on competition from around the US.

On all three sites, the primary way that DFS players earn money is through entering tournaments that offer a slice of the prize purse to the top teams in a group.

For example, imagine that 5,000 players enter a tournament and the top 50 teams are paid. Those winners receive a percentage of the total prize pool based upon their place in the final standings.

DraftKings and FanDuel are widely considered to be the top two companies for DFS events. They offer players the opportunity to build a virtual roster of professional athletes in a variety of sports. Then, they take the player’s assembled team and compete in events to earn points.

What Is Monkey Knife Fight?

Another site that is growing in popularity is Monkey Knife Fight (MKF). Although the site offers traditional point scoring like FanDuel or DraftKings, they also offer “over/under” contests that allow you the opportunity to take home double your wager.

For example, let’s say Tom Brady is playing on Sunday. MPF might set Brady’s over/under on yards thrown at 250. You then can choose if he will go over or under that total. After you make a few similar choices with other NFL players, you follow along as they play, and if your lineup matches with your choices, you win your bet.

Betting On Horse Races In Maryland

Maryland offers betting on horse races for both in-state racing and off-track racing around the globe. There are several horse racing tracks in Maryland, including the Pimlico Race Course, which hosts the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown.

All racetracks offer in-person betting on on-site races. You can also bet on races being held at other tracks in the US and abroad.

Horse race bettors can also bet on horses online in Maryland through several different platforms. These include the following:

  • TVG
  • NYRA Bets
  • TwinSpires

All sites off some form of welcome offers, such as a deposit-match bonus or risk-free bet.

Online Lottery In Maryland

Maryland offers online lottery options through a subscription service. Players can repeat their favorite numbers in the multi-state Mega Millions, Powerball, and Cash4Life games. They can also participate in the Multi-Match contest offered by the Maryland Lottery.

A subscription account can be set up online, but the application and payment must be mailed to the Lottery office for processing. Once you are set up, you no longer have to worry about going to the store to create a ticket.

Maryland Sports Betting Bonuses

Here are some of the bonuses you can expect from online sportsbooks in Maryland.

Risk-Free Bet

The risk-free bet offer is a common welcome bonus that invites new members to place their first bet risk-free up to a certain amount. For example, the BetMGM welcome bonus is a risk-free bet of up to $1,000.

Deposit Bonus

Some sports betting apps will match your first deposit up to a certain amount. For example, the DraftKings Sportsbook signup offer is a 20% bonus up to $1,000 while the BetRivers welcome offer is a 100% bonus up to $250.

Odds Boosters

Most online sportsbooks will have special odds boosters on select lines, especially during a major event like the Super Bowl or March Madness. The odds on unique prop bets that the sportsbook wants to advertise are also often boosted.

BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, and other online sportsbooks have a separate section specifically for odds boosters so you can find them all in one place.

Parlay Insurance

An increasingly common offer is parlay insurance, meaning you can receive part of your parlay wager back if one leg loses. For example, if one leg of a five-leg NFL parlay loses, you’ll receive $25 in betting credits.
