Despite the limited appeal of its feature game, Grand Tiger will attract casual players with its lovely design, plentiful wild symbols and simple learning curve. This slot game by Amatic is available in free and paid modes on desktop, tablet and mobile devices, enabling players to give it a spin wherever they want.
With its sharp colorful symbols and excellent animation, Grand Tiger slot looks much better than most other games designed by Amatic. Though it has a familiar five-reel setup, the three-four-five-four-three arrangement of rows gives the game a diamond-like appearance.
Grand Tiger forgoes paylines altogether, so the player only adjusts the bet. Wins are simply activated when matching symbols appear in any position on adjacent reels from left to right, starting from the first reel. This results in 720 ways to win, according to the game.
Like other Amatic games, Grand Tiger’s help screen is not easy to find on the desktop window, hidden in a small icon in the upper left corner. The paytables and rules are easy to follow once one finds the help button, but (like other Amatic games) the “Gambling” feature isn’t mentioned at all.
The Start button activates single spins while the Auto Start button triggers autoplay. These automatic spins are not customizable, but can be stopped at anytime.
Playing card values of J to A are fashioned to look like Asian script, and deliver the smallest payouts. Chinese-themed icons—including a female warrior, coins and a lotus flower—are more valuable. A golden tiger head provides the biggest payout of the regular symbols.
The most exciting symbol is the Tiger Wild, which lies on the second, third and fourth reels. It is four-to-five rows tall, enabling wins even if the entire symbol doesn’t appear. If the entire wild symbol is revealed, tiger animation begins and another full set of Tiger Wilds appear on an additional row. This results in the game’s largest payouts when the more lucrative symbols are involved.
There is also a Bonus scatter symbol. It can appear anywhere on the reels, three or more times, to produce some of the best payouts AND start the “Bonus spins” feature game.
Three bonus symbols results in ten free spins, four bonuses earn 15 free spins and five bonuses get 20 freebies. The “Bonus spins” screen is identical to the regular screen save for a gold background and three fewer buttons.
The sole entertainment value to the “Bonus spins” game is that the spins are free. Otherwise, the reels and rows are the same and all the payouts are identical to that of the base game. Even the Bonus symbols work the same, earning 10-15-20 additional spins for three, four or five symbols.
Grand Tiger also has a gambling mode, wherein one can risk one’s winnings by guessing a facedown card’s color or suit. Choosing the right color doubles the winnings, while picking the correct suit quadruples the payout. One incorrect guess negates the entire win.
Though the feature game is a slight letdown, the wild symbols are not. They set off the game’s most detailed animation and deliver consistent sizable winnings. Massive wins trigger a screen tremor and a large golden NICE WIN message.
Other than Asian intro music, the game is absent background music and sounds. Wins and payouts deliver the same sound effects every time. It’s odd the designers skimped on audio when the visuals are so crisp. Though the desktop version looks great, Grand Tiger plays even better and is easier to use on mobile devices, with larger and simpler icons.
Because Grand Tiger slot is short on unique features it may not appeal to the seasoned player for very long. But its great look, simple gameplay and many win combinations should draw in new and casual players.
