You’ll be treated to dueling banjos as a soundtrack to this Texas style slot. The star of the game is a cartoon armadillo called Artie. You’ll also find a racoon, a road runner bird and classic forked cactuses on the reels. Overall this slot is a riot of color, with red rocks around the reels and bright, animated symbols.
The free spins round has a nested bonus game (the bonus can only be triggered during the free spins). Here you will join Artie as be bowls along a Texas roadway, aiming for 3 strikes for a big multiplier win.
You get a choice of win lines in this game. The default is 25. As always when wild symbols are in play, I recommend reducing your coin size to suit your bankroll – and sticking with the full 25 lines. You can bet from just 1c per line and up. Auto play comes with a basic and advanced (configurable) version.
Higher paying symbols are headed up by the logo. This has the words ‘Armadillo Artie’ in gold, against red rocks with a giant yellow sun. You’ll get 1000 coins for hitting 5 on a win-line, 250 for 4 and 60 coins for. Next come the animals, with a snake (wearing a hat) paying 750 coins, a roadrunner paying 500 for 5 and a racoon paying 500. The high paying symbols are completed with the skull of a cow mounted on a shield, and a classic cactus.
Armadillo Artie Wilds
During the base game, Armadillo Artie will act as a substitute symbol. He will help to create extra wins with any of the regular symbols covered above. Artie does not substitute for the free spins bonus symbol. During the free spins game Artie gets new powers – becoming an expanding wild symbol.
Free Spins and Nested Bowling Game
Special symbols that look like a sheriff badge can appear on the middle 3 reels. If you get them all then you get 10 free spins. You’ll see a green box appear above the reels which counts down the number of free spins you have remaining.
During these spins, Armadillo Artie symbols can expand horizontally to make extra wins at times. If you are lucky enough to get one towards the left which expands out to the right – these wins can be significant.
The free spins bonus symbols are replaced by bowling bonus symbols during your free spins. This does mean that you can’t retrigger the free spins. What you can trigger is a separate bowling game.
Here you see an animated Artie to the left, and a scene with a road in the middle. There are 10 pins, and you pick from one of three arrows on the road to launch the ball. This shows an animation of the ball striking the pins, and you are given a score. Your maximum score is 3 strikes. This will get you a 30x multiplier on your total spin amount. This is a random picks game, though is entertaining to play!
Once the free spins are completed, you’ll see a screen giving you a total of your wins (from both games), and return to the main game.
This Amaya slot feels more alive than many similar games. The riot of colors does help. The gold logo, green cacti and red-brown of the rocks in the background are all lively combinations. On the reels, the symbols are nicely drawn, and have entertaining animations. My favorite is the road runner bird, who turns out to be wearing training shoes.
Artie comes to life during the bowling game, becoming a 3D style animation. There are some nice small touches like the dust could brought up by your bowling ball.
Sound effects are a big plus point for this game. There is a banjo tune while you spin, and different shorter tunes for different winning combinations. You’ll hear that cliché ‘yeee hawww’ at times too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this slot, and would rate is as good as that other Texas-themed classic, Texas Tea from IGT. The color and upbeat music make a positive first impression. The animations and bonus games will then keep you entertained. The free spins with expanding wilds give you the best shot at some bigger wins. Check out Armadillo Artie for yourself today!
