While there are many better-known Greek gods, Athena was an interesting character. Her portfolio included being the goddess of wisdom, craft and war. She gets to play center stage in this Amaya slot. Pushing aside the usual characters including Zeus, who normally take the lead role in Greek myth slots.
This game has some nice touches to the production, a bigger than average reel setup, and a free spins bonus game based on stacked wilds. You’ll have classic music while you spin, and the chance of some oversized line wins when stacked wilds line up with the better paying symbols.
You’ll find a 5 reel by 4 row grid for this game – which has 40 win lines all crossing from the left-hand side. You can’t change the number of lines, though you do get to pick your coin size and bet multiplier. The smallest spin is just 40c. Auto spin comes in fixed increments, or you can choose to spin until you hit the feature.
The pay table will show you that a shield showing a woman’s head is the highest paying symbol. This is worth 1500 coins for 5, 375 for 4, 90 for 3 and 15 for just 2. This is the only symbol with a prize for 2 of a kind from the left – the others all require at least 3.
Next comes a golden statue of Athena’s head, this is worth 375 coins for the full 5. Another field, the acropolis, a warriors’ helmet and some olives (which do look strange) make up the high paying symbols. Playing cards ace, king, queen and jack are in play as the filler symbols.
Wilds play an important role in this game. They are stacked, and will appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. When you win with wilds substituting for another symbol, that win is doubled. Since you can cover entire reels with these wilds, you will sometimes end up triggering several of the 40 win lines at the same time.
Wilds also trigger the free slot bonus game. You need at least 6 to start the feature, and get more free spins the more wilds you hit. If you cover reels 2, 3 and 4 entirely with wilds then you get the maximum 21 free games. You will also get 40x 4 of a kind wins, and depending on whether the symbols match on reel 5, some 5 of a kind wins too!
The smallest number of free spins you can trigger is 3, by hitting 6 of the wilds.
When the spins start you will see a message and then see a night version of the reels with a starry sky above. On the reels are different wilds, which come individually. These show a head of Athena, and can appear on reels 2, 3 4 or 5. At the end of your spins you’ll see the combined total of what you won in the spins, and the prize from the triggering spin in the base game.
Athena herself is your host for this game. She stands to the left of the reels, shield and spear in hand. Athena will react to your wins, pointing with her shield when you get a win which includes the wilds. You can see a tree to the right, with a landscape behind that.
By contrast the reels are plain, these have a grey background and are dominated by the slightly jagged design of the playing card symbols. The unique symbols are nicely drawn, with the head / statue of Athena the best of them. It took me a while to work out what the olive way, at first this looked like a well-rounded Praying Mantis! There are plenty of animations, both from the symbols and the host goddess.
Sound effects range from a tinkling when you spin the reels, to fully fledged classical music during the free spins. There are some lightning effects to go with wild wins.
This game is certainly worth a spin. If you enjoy Greek myths type games, then having a female lead will make a pleasant change from the usual gods. There is plenty enough going on to make this slot stand out on its own. The stacked wilds (with multipliers) are welcome – and the free spins with extra wilds have the potential to be profitable too.
