Many follow up slots simply improve the graphics, and maybe add a bonus feature or two. This is not the case with Berry Blast Plus from Amaya. They have taken the general theme used in Berry Blast, and given this a complete make-over. The only thing that made the cut is the symbol design. You’ll still play with berries which have eyes, mouths and a lot of character.
Differences begin with the setup. This game is an all-ways slot, with 243 combinations instead of traditional win-lines. There is also a cascade feature. A free spins bonus is in play, where you get increasing multipliers for strings of cascading wins.
Instead of using 30 win-lines like the original game, the improved Berry Blast Plus dispenses with win-lines altogether. As long as you have matching symbols on consecutive reels from the left without any gaps, that will count as a win. This makes it very easy to see your wins, and you’ll never think you had a winning combo – only to find out that you ‘missed’ that win line in this game.
You can bet from 70 coins and up to cover all of these combinations. You can add a bet multiplier of you to 10x and increase your coin size too. If you prefer not to keep clicking, then make use of the auto-play to the right of the spin button.
When you make a winning combination, the winning fruits will explode (literally!). Your win is counted first. These explosions leave gaps on the reels. The fruits above fall into them, and new fruits appear at the top of the reels. You will sometimes make a new win when things fall down, in which case the process keeps going.
Wins are on the smaller side. You have a lot of combinations, and will often get several wins in a row. The biggest comes from the cherry, which is worth 500 coins for 5 of a kind. The melon is next, at 250 coins, with the pineapple (200), orange (175), and apple (150) following these. The smaller wins come from playing card symbols, aces down to jacks.
Stacked wilds can help you trigger multiple wins from the same spin. These show a basket of fruit, with all of them included. They substitute for any of the regular fruit or playing card symbols. If you get 3 wilds covering one of the reels (they appear on reels 3, 4 and 5 only), then you will get 3x any win you create with them via the all-ways winning system.
Scatter symbols show a gold coin with a cherry on it. These symbols pay based on the total number in view – and do not need to fit with the all-ways system. The top prize is an impressive 12500 coins for the full 5, with 2500 coins for 4 and 250 for 3.
You will also trigger free spins with 3+ scatter symbols in view. You’ll get 15, 20 or 25 spins for 3, 4 or 5 of these coins.
The free spins bonus sees the background change, and the music become more party-like. The big difference is the multipliers for cascading wins. The first (regular) win is at 1x, while each cascade sees this increase by 1. If you string together a few wins, this could result in some big prizes. Scatters are in play, though they only pay the cash prizes and do not retrigger the free spins.
Compared to the original Berry Blast slot, the fruits are very much alive in this game. All of them are animated, with facial expressions that change when they grow and explode (spattering fruit around). The reels are transparent. When you spin, the symbols from the previous spin drop away, being replaced by fruits falling down with a splat sound.
The explosions are excellent, and when you get a big win, fruits will appear around the reels and cheer with you! There is a soundtrack, which has hints of a Caribbean calypso about it, this gets even livelier during the free spins bonus.
This is a different game to the original Berry Blast. Both are enjoyable, and this one is stronger on the graphics and animations than the first. There is no second screen bonus game here, though the free spins with multipliers is a great addition. The scatters are also more straightforward, and again have the potential for a big win. I enjoyed this quirky, lively slot – check it out for yourself soon!
