For me the name of this slot does not quite work. After playing it, I have to admit that Lucky Lager is an enjoyable Octoberfest style slot. One of the concepts, beer filling up a reel to make a wild, will be familiar if you have enjoyed Bier Haus from WMS. The traditional Germanic accordion type music, blonde servers and wooden décor around the reels all contribute to the European beer festival atmosphere.
There is a second screen bonus game which involves playing darts. The main feature is a free spins bonus game. You will get a wild reel (it fills with beer) on every spin during this game. There are also special wilds during the base game.
The bottle tops, kegs and bottles which are used as symbols cover 25 win-lines in this 5-reel video slot. You can configure both the number of lines and the coin size (from 1c and up). I prefer to stay with the full 25 lines, as this takes maximum advantage of the beer wilds – which can fill up entire reels at times. You’ll see the standard Amaya setup of ‘Bet Max’ and ‘Autoplay’ under the reels.
Your biggest prizes in this game will come from multiple wins – where the wilds enable several win-lines at once. The top paying symbol is a logo. This shows a blonde server, carrying big glasses of lager – with a Germanic sounding brand name underneath. You’ll get 750 coins for 5 of these, 200 for 4 and 30 coins for 3. Kegs of beer come next (500 coins for 5) followed by a box containing bottles (400).
Most of the symbols are bottle tops. Each one has a colored playing card symbol on it. Aces down to nines are in play.
Wilds only appear on the middle 3 reels in this game. These are empty beer glasses. Above these reels you will see a tap. Each time the glass hits, the tap will open, a realistic pouring sound effect will sound, and the glass will fill.
If this glass is on the bottom of the 3 rows of symbols, all 3 spots on that reel will fill. If it is in the middle you get 2 rows. If it is on the top row, this is just a single wild. You can trigger all 3 of the middle rows at once if you get lucky – enabling a lot of wins.
Traditional pub dartboards appear on reels 2, 4 and 5. You need to hit all 3 to trigger the second screen bonus game. You will see a dartboard taking up the entire screen, with 6 darts underneath. Each dart has a different pattern on the flight. You pick 3 darts, which fly at the board, awarding credits. If one of them hits the bullseye, you get another 3 shots (after completing those for the current round). Up to 3 rounds are possible.
Free Spins are triggered by the special neon-sign free spins bonus sign on reels 1, 3 and 5. You’ll get 10 free spins – with a wild reel each time. After each spin, one reel will fill with lager – becoming wild. The regular glass wilds do appear during this bonus, only they do not fill-up as they do in the base game.
Almost everything in the design of this game points to the famous German beer festival. I use ‘almost’ as the ‘rules’ surrounding the dart board for the bonus game are in English! There is a wooden bar view around the reels, with bottles and boxes for beer in view.
The backing of the reels is green. While the playing card symbols do somewhat dominate, having these designed as bottle tops helps things stay on-theme.
I like the pouring sound when the reels fill up with lager. This animation ends with the word ‘wild’ moving around as if suspended in beer. Animation for the darts game is also impressive. Traditional accordion music helps to bring this slot to life.
As Oktoberfest themed slots go, this is an excellent game. Not all of the ideas are unique. The pouring wilds can be found elsewhere. This does not take away from the game, which has a good balance of a solid base game and some interesting features. Check out Lucky Lager for yourself soon!
