Betsoft recognized that the video slot market was missing a game Asian slot market and chose to fill that void with Fa Fa Twins. Because the game also utilizes both Japanese and Chinese imagery, its target audience is likely the otaku subculture. The game has a sharp colorful look along with simple gameplay that’s customizable with the user-friendly interface. Fa Fa Twins slot is available in free and paid modes on desktop, tablet and mobile platforms.
Fa Fa Twins has a five-reel three-row structure familiar to online slot players. Though the game only references “243 ways to win” in lieu of paylines, the bet seems to be centered around a multiple of 25 lines. Bets can be adjusted using the “Choose Coin” and “Bet Level” buttons. Single plays are activated using the “Spin” or “Max Bet” buttons. “Auto Play” allows the player to customize automatic spins up to 100. A gear button adjusts the game’s options, while the question mark button leads to the paytable window.
Fa Fa Twins’s symbols, gameplay buttons and background follow a vibrant red and gold color scheme. The reels spin smoothly and the payout animation (especially the Big Wins) looks gorgeous.
The eponymous twins stand at either side of the reels. Oddly, the game gives them almost nothing to do. They don’t react to every win, only springing to brief life for wins 170 credits or higher. When the girls do respond, they each have only two reactions, and one set of sound effects, which occur randomly no matter if wins equal 170 or 1700 credits.
The slot uses stylized playing card values, from 10 to Ace, for its lowest-paying symbols. Beyond these are several Asian-themed icons. A glowing lantern pays the same as the Ace and King. The lotus flower, a valued image in Buddhism, delivers the next highest wins. A green purse with Chinese coins is the next most valuable. The golden fish, another Buddhism-related icon, is next. Maneki-neko, “the beckoning cat”, is the second-highest paying symbol. The game uses a gold Maneki-neko as it represents wealth and prosperity. The Fa Fa Twins are the most profitable of the symbols.
Because the game doesn’t explicitly use paylines, wins occur when three or more matching symbols appear on adjacent reels, from left to right, starting from the first reel.
Fa Fa Twins does not have free spins nor bonus games, but does have a pair of lucrative features.
First, there’s a Fa Fa Twins Wild symbol that appears on reels two, three, four and five. It substitutes for all icons and increases payout frequency.
The game’s main feature is the Dual Reels. As there are two Fa Fa Twins, every spin has a pair of adjacent reels that produce identical symbols. During random spins, these identical reels expand to three, four or even all five reels. The more identical reels, the larger the wins.
Fa Fa Twins also has a gambling game called Double Up. It’s triggered with the “Double Up” button after any single spin win. Double Up is a coin flip guess. Choosing correctly doubles the payout, while a wrong guess forfeits it.
Though the slot is sorely missing feature games, the dual reels can result in excellent payouts. Wild symbols are standard in current slot games so it’s difficult to get excited about this game having one. With all the game’s great graphic work, it’s a shame the designers didn’t fully commit to animating the twins.
Serious slot gamers may not enjoy the absence of feature games, but casual slot players and otaku enthusiasts will dig a few spins alongside the Fa Fa Twins.
