The mehteran was a marching band of the Ottomans (now the Turks), and it’s believed to be the world’s oldest example of a military marching band. Their main purpose was to accompany troops into battle and play music designed to inspire their allies and terrify their enemies.
The band was primarily active from 1299 to 1826, and it wasn’t until 1908 that the traditions were revived as part of the Imperial Military Museum. They were later abolished in the 1930s, but another resurgence took place in 1952 that has carried over into present-day Turkey.
While this music is often alien to residents of the West, its influence cannot be denied. Numerous classical composers were impressed by its style and military precision, and both Mozart and Beethoven created pieces that drew from the mehteran.
The following are the symbols available in the March of Mehteran slot machine. Their value as part of a winning payline varies depending on the player’s wager, and in this example I’ve used the maximum bet of 45.00 (3.00 per 15 lines).
If you wind up with more than one win during a spin, the total earnings are combined and added to your account.
In order to trigger this feature, the player must get three scatter symbols somewhere on the reels during a spin. When this occurs, the player is taken to a screen where the bonus round’s expanding symbol is randomly chosen. Most icons are presented as options, with the exception of the wild, scatter, and special.
The player begins with 10 bonus spins, and regular wins are counted as normal. When at least three of the expanding symbols appear on three or more reels, the icons expand vertically over the entire reel.
If the player is lucky enough to get a winning payline, they have the option of immediately attempting to increase their winnings. In order to do so, they only have to click the button marked “Gamble” on the main screen.
A new screen pops up, this time displaying a drum and a trumpet. The player choose one of these icons, and then an Ottoman musician randomly glances back and forth between the two. Eventually, his eyes come to rest on either the drum or the trumpet, and this determines whether the player doubles their current win or loses it all.
When the player guesses correctly, they can choose to once again risk this new amount. This can be done 10 consecutive times, or until the player’s current winning total reaches 10,000.00. At this point, the player is returned to the base game.
The March of the Mehteran slot machine from Booming Games has a unique Turkish flavor, and the whole game appealed to the history buff in me. While it’s nothing special to look at, the free spins and gamble option present players with plenty of ways to increase their bankroll. Throw in a top jackpot of 75,000.00, and you’ve got a slot that’s bound to attract some attention.
