IGT is an acronym for International Game Technology. They’re the largest slot machine manufacturing company in the world, and at least half of all the gaming machines in United States land-based casinos are IGT slots. They’re also a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the surprisingly easy to remember ticker symbol IGT.
The company launched in the 1950s and went public in 1981. In the 1980s, IGT launched their MegaBucks wide area progressive jackpot games. In 1996, IGT created its still-most-famous and most popular slots game, the Wheel of Fortune game. Their Game King product allowed casinos to offer multiple games from a single machine, thrilling casino owners and gamblers alike. The company also launched their ever-present Elvis slot machine games in 1998.
In 2005 the company acquired WagerWorks, which focuses on providing Internet games to online casinos. This has enabled IGT to enter the lucrative online casino market.
The rest of this page takes a closer look at some of IGT’s most popular games and their availability online.
One of the most popular offerings from IGT for the last 30 years has been the MegaBucks progressive. This is a wide area progressive slots game that features a jackpot that starts at $10 million and grows with every spin of the wheel of every game in the network. This is a dollar game where you can wager 3 coins max on each spin—you must make the max bet in order to win the progressive.
As of this writing, the most recent win was booked on November 30, 2014 at the Rampart Casino in Las Vegas. The lucky player won $14.3 million. Since this is such a large jackpot, it should be no surprise that it isn’t hit very often. On average, the MegaBucks jackpot is paid out 2.3 times per year, or once every 5 months or so. If you’re the type of player who tries to play a game when it’s due to pay out, take a look at when the last MegaBucks jackpot was hit. If it’s been five months or more, go for it.
Wheel of Fortune is just one of a plethora of game-show-based slot machines available from IGT. Merv Griffin created the original Wheel of Fortune game show in 1975. Since then, its popularity has become phenomenal. It’s now the longest running game show still airing in the United States.
Multiple versions of the Wheel of Fortune slot machine exist, each with different denominations, symbols, and bonus rounds, but they all have one thing in common—one of the bonus rounds lets the player spin the wheel. The familiar sound effects of the audience cheering and the repetition of the show’s “wheel…of…fortune…” mantra has a hypnotic effect on players. Other online slots software companies have released knockoffs of Wheel of Fortune (with such clever names as “Wheel of Wealth”), but canny players can tell the difference instantly.
IGT specializes in slots based on game shows. Other game show slots games available from the company include Family Feud, Jeopardy!, and Let’s Make a Deal.
No American singer or celebrity is more quintessentially American than Elvis. In fact, he’s probably the most quintessential of Las Vegas entertainers, even though his death in 1977 means that he hasn’t performed a show there in almost 40 years. Impersonators keep his legacy alive—impersonators and slot machines.
Like Wheel of Fortune, the Elvis brand is more than just a single game. Multiple games feature this branding, sometimes with a subtitle and sometimes without. For example, you might be playing the Elvis: A Little More Action slot machine game, but your elderly aunt might prefer the Elvis: The King slots game.
The “A Little More Action” version of the game is especially exciting because it offers 50 paylines. The bonus symbols are, of course, pictures of Elvis Presley himself. At least four different Elvis slot machine games are available online, but because of the draconian Internet gambling laws in effect in various states in the USA, they’re only available to players from other countries.
Of course, IGT also offers other slots games based on other pop singers, including American Idol, Dolly Parton, and Michael Jackson.
Another popular game from this manufacturer is the “Double Diamond” slot machine. This is a basic three reel game with a single payline, but it’s notable for being almost omni-present in every casino you’ve ever been to. The game features all of the classic slot machine symbols everyone thinks of—the bar, the number 7, cherries, etc. It’s a fun game, and if you’re not interested in gimmicks related to pop culture, it’s an excellent choice to try next time you visit a casino in Reno, Vegas, or Atlantic City.
Below you’ll find a list of many of the other slots games available from International Game Technology. This is by no means a comprehensive list.
International Game Technology (IGT) is the 800 pound gorilla of slot machine manufacturers, and if you visit a land-based casino in the United States, you’ll almost certainly run into multiple examples of their machines. Unfortunately, United States players aren’t able to play their games online, but players from other countries can. IGT games are fun, and their company is best-known for adapting existing pop culture brands into slot machine games.
