You’d be hard pressed to find a slot maker that does not have a slot based on the legends of King Arthur. Avalon is one of two from MicroGaming. This is a 5-line video slot, and is not the newest game in their range. If you’d like to play a version with updated graphics and bonus games, check out MicroGaming’s Avalon 2.
In addition to the usual wilds and scatters, you’ll find a free spins bonus game in this slot. This has a twist – random multipliers. Every win during the 12 free spins can be multiplied by up to 7. While I found it took a long time to trigger this bonus – some of the wins when it did come are on the larger side!
This game has 20 win-lines, and lets you bet up to 10 coins per line. The smallest coin is 1c, making 20c the smallest spin amount. There is a bet max button, auto-play option and you can gamble after a win on the flip of a playing card.
Clicking the regal font of the ‘View Pay-out’ button brings up a screen which shows that the holy grail is not the best paying symbol! This distinction goes to the white picture of the castle of Avalon. 5 of these will get you 3000 coins – with pay-outs all the way down to 2 from the left. This is also the wild symbol, and will substitute for any of the regular symbols (though not the lady of the lake scatters).
A golden symbol showing a chest, with golden light coming from it, is the next on the pay-out list. This has special significance in the free spins game. In the base game, it is a regular symbol, and worth up to 1000 coins if you hit 5 on a win-line.
High paying symbols are completed by the crown (800 for 5), Avalon coat of arms (600), broach (500) and holy grail / goblet (400). There are playing cards making up the smaller wins. The king and queen have crowns – though these are standard and not due to the theme of this slot!
You will win prizes as a multiple of your total bet for getting 2 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. These are the ghostly lady of the lake, who is holding the hilt of the sword Excalibur. 5 will get you 200x your total bet.
If you hit 3 or more in the same spin, you trigger the free spins bonus game. This is 12 free spins, and you’ll need to hit a button saying ‘start free spins’ under the control panel to kick them off. There are two big differences to the base game during this bonus.
First, all wins are awarded a random multiplier of between 2x and 7x what is on the pay table. This can give some big boosts. It brings the top potential line win up to 21,000 coins. Second, the golden chests become wild. These are in addition to the Avalon wilds, giving you plenty of extra wins.
You can retrigger this bonus with 3+ extra scatters during play.
If there is one thing about the Avalon slot game which will stick with me, it is the crazy tunes after you win. There are lots of variations, all electronic, and all verging on silly. To say they do not fit with the semi-mystical Avalon theme is an understatement. They are not quite bad enough to be ‘so bad it is good’!
Reels fill the entire screen, meaning there is no scenery around them. Those reels have a plain blue backing. The symbols are smart, and a little dated. You’ll see some animations, for example the clouds parting over the castle when it gets involved in a win.
Ambient sounds try to mimic a Gregorian chant, though most of the noises are retro whirrs. You’ll hear an electronic attempt at some ancient music when the free spins round kicks off.
While there are better Avalon slots in terms of graphics (and especially sounds!), this one does have some interesting game play elements. The base game is very standard fare, with 20 win-lines and no outsized line wins or jackpots. When the free spins kicks in, things get more interesting. Here you can get multipliers of up to 7x on your wins – at the same time as a lot of extra wilds. The potential for a big pay-out is certainly there – if you can stand the crazy winning tunes!
