This MicroGaming slot is a big upgrade on the original Big Kahuna slot. The graphics are better, the bonus game is far more entertaining – and there are some entertaining comedy skits from severed heads too! The setting is a South American volcano, during Aztec times. You’ll find that traditional playing card symbols have been replaced by fruits. This makes for a bright game, full of animations.
The main bonus is played on a real snakes and ladders board. Your hero picks dice and tries to get to the top. There is also a randomly triggered free spins game. While wild symbols multiply by 2x in the base game – during free spins this becomes 4x on any win.
It surprised me to see only 15 win-lines in play in this Big Kahuna slot machine. Graphics and production look more up to date, and a smaller number of win lines usually signifies an older slot. Those lines are adjustable, and cross a 5 reel, 3 row grid. You can bet from 1c per line and up from there, and play up to 20 coins per line.
Wilds play an important role in the base game. These are the logo symbols. They have the highest single prize (5000 coins for 5 of a kind) and have multipliers. Any win with a wild during the base game doubles the prize. In my experience, there are a lot of wilds in play.
Regular symbols are topped by a mask which represents the volcano god. This is worth 2000 coins for the full 5 of a kind. There is a guy (the same one that goes on the bonus quest / game) worth 1000 coins for 5, a lady worth 700 and the lizard and monkey from the original version of this slot. These are worth 500 and 300 respectively.
Exotic jungle fruits make up the smaller wins.
You will find bonus symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5. These show a snake wrapped around a ladder. Hitting all 3 will show a sequence where the guy from the reels gets a silver pedant put around his neck. He then appears at the bottom of a big snakes and ladders board. To the right of this board you see 3 severed heads, hanging by their hair. These comment on the game, and are funny – though not in a friendly way!
Below the head are 5 coloured dice. You click on these, which roll – moving you along the board. As in the original game, you go up ladders and fall down snakes. You can be sure the severed heads will have a good laugh if you hit a snake! If you roll a 6, you get a free roll.
There are 100 squares in total, and each one you pass gives you 1x your spin amount. If you hit the top, you’ll get a generous 100x your bet.
No special symbols trigger the free spins game. Instead, the volcano will erupt at random. You see an animation for this. The background of the slot then turns blue, and drumming music plays. There are only 5 spins each time. Making up for this is the fact that any wins which involve wild (logo) symbols are 4x compared to the base game.
This is a bright slot, which is drawn in a cartoon style. You’ll see a jungle scene around the reels, with hills in the background. The logo above the reels has a snake on it. Symbols are bright and spin over pale orange reels. The monkey is my favourite. Instead of the cheeky look of the monkey on the original Big Kahuna slot, this one looks a little fierce.
There are plenty of small animations. Check out the wild symbol, where the word ‘wild’ seems to erupt from a volcano. You’ll find ambient background music and jungle drum sounds when you hit wins.
The snakes and ladders bonus is really well produced. This would be entertaining enough just as a game. For me those comedy moments from the severed heads make it a must-see.
Considering this slot only has 15 win-lines (usually only older slots have this number), it is a really entertaining slot machine game. The base game has plenty of wild symbols, which will double your wins. It is the snakes and ladders game which really makes this slot stand out. You can win up to 100x your bet, and those severed heads will be delighted to see you slide down a snake!
