As Aztec slots go, there are certainly more up to date games in terms of graphics. Whether they have the same cheeky charm as MicroGaming’s Big Kahuna, I am not so sure! This is a bright 9-win line online slot, with 2 different second screen bonus games. There is a curious mix of Aztec masks, fruits and animals on the reels.
You’ll win chips by keeping the volcano gods happy in this game. These gods require you to pick a fruit mask and drop it in. A second picks game sees a more traditional task of picking one of 10 different Aztec masks. Topping this are some big line wins, which are boosted by both wild symbols and scatters.
If the style of the graphics does not make it apparent, then the 9 win-lines will quickly show you that the Big Kahuna slot is an older slot. You can lower the number of win lines. I would not recommend doing this, as the wild symbols become less effective the fewer lines that you play. You can bet up to 5 coins per line.
The pay table is accessed via buttons either side of the logo at the bottom of the reels. This shows that the wild symbols have the biggest prize – and by a big margin. These symbols show a stone dial, with the logo in front and the word ‘wild’ underneath. They pay a big 8,000-coin prize for 5. Unusually, this wild pays from 1 of a kind (on the left-hand real). Unusually, this wild does not substitute for all the symbols. It will replace only the 6 different fruit symbols to create extra wins.
Next in the prizes list comes a colourful Aztec god, and a big lizard (with tongue sticking out to the side). These are each worth 500 coins for 5, and pay down to 2 of a kind. Fruits make up the lower paying symbols. These are not the usual slot symbols. They are more detailed pictures of fruits which have been cut in half. There is an orange, kiwi fruit, one with white flesh, a melon, pineapple and raspberries.
A grinning monkey is the scatter symbol. This pays out based on the total number in view. You can get up to 200x your total bet if you are lucky enough to see 5 anywhere on the reels after a single spin. The monkey does not trigger any bonus games.
To trigger a bonus, you’ll need to hit 3 or more special symbols on consecutive reels on a pay-line. There are two symbols. One shows a volcano, which appears to be spewing gold. The other shows a golden Aztec style mask, with big teeth!
The volcano bonus is a dramatic scene from right above the crater of the volcano. You see 5 different masks made from fruit to the top left of the screen. Your only task is to pick one. This is then dropped into the volcano, triggering a win. If you trigger this bonus with 4 or 5 volcano symbols, instead of just 3, then the amount you can win improves. You can win up to 2500 coins from this game.
Masks trigger a different bonus, where you simply pick from 2 rows of elaborate looking Aztec masks. You win credit amounts, and keep picking until you hit one which says ‘collect’. If you hit a collect first time, then you get a consolation prize of a few coins per mask. Once again, triggering this bonus with more masks will result in bigger prizes.
Reels take up almost the whole screen, which leaves no room for extra designs. The line markers look like a bamboo pole. This does leave plenty of room for bright symbols, which spin on plain white reels. Some of the symbols, for example the volcano, are detailed and dramatic, while others are very simple. I like the Aztec god / warrior, with a head-dress and fruit on his dagger.
There are plenty of entertaining sound effects in the Big Kahuna slot machine. Examples are the ambient jungle sounds between spins, cheeky monkey noises and exploding volcano sounds. There is not too much by way of animations on this older slot. The stone behind the wild symbols does twist (with a grinding sound effect) when this is involved in a win.
I enjoyed this game – though it is more of a retro slot than anything made in recent years. The bright symbols and overall humour of the game shine though. While the picks games are not too engaging, they do have the potential for some bigger prizes. These prizes can be boosted by hitting 4 or 5 triggering symbols instead of the required 3.
If you enjoy this game, you can also check out a new version. ‘Big Kahuna Snakes and Ladders’ takes the entertainment factor (and graphics) to a new level!
