Carnaval is a 9-line video slot from MicroGaming with a colourful and atmospheric theme. It brings the sights and sounds of a street carnival into a very enjoyable slot. On the reels, you’ll find a rich mix of symbols including a dancing lady in full head-dress, a happy looking clown and a trumpet.
This game is not complicated. There are no features outside of the base game, making it ideal for those who enjoy pure slot play without any distractions. This has the added benefit of allowing some huge win amounts on the reels, amounts that are usually just confined to the wild symbols.
This straightforward MicroGaming designed slot has the very familiar 5×3 reel set up. It features a lower than usual number of 9 win-lines. Your biggest wins come from hitting five in a row, but any wins of three or more symbols from left to right will win a prize (2 in a row pays out too for the best symbols in the game).
The title symbol is the highest paying one, the golden lettering of ‘Carnaval’ paying out a huge 5,000 coins for hitting five in a row. Next on the pay table is dancing carnival girl in a brightly coloured feathered head dress. Land the maximum five and you’ll win 600 coins. The clown comes next at 500 coins. The other two themed standard symbols are the carnival emblem which shows the sun in a harlequin style and the golden trumpet. Completing the symbols are the playing cards 10, J, Q, K and A.
In common with many MicroGaming slots, there is a regular and expert mode for the controls beneath the reels. First, as a default, you have the regular mode. Here you’ll simply have 3 buttons to use – ‘select lines’, ‘bet max’ and ‘spin’. You can choose any number between 1 and 9 lines. Hitting ‘bet max’ will automatically spin the reels with all 9 win-lines in use. You’ll also find + and – buttons to set the stake.
The other mode is ‘expert’ where the auto play is added to the mix. Hit 5x or 10x for this immediate number of spins. Or hit ‘auto play’ itself to choose up to 100 spins. You can also set stop losses here too.
While there are no bonus features in this game, there are two ways in which you can boost your win amount.
The first of these is the wild symbol, which states the word ‘wild’ in an intricate design of purple and green feathers. This will substitute for any other symbol in the game apart from the scatter symbol. This wild symbol appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only.
The second addition to the game is the scatter symbol. This has the word ‘scatter’ within a blue disc, once again with an elaborate design. Scatter wins are based upon your total stake. Land 3 scatters and you’ll win 2x your stake, while 4 scatters pay 10x your stake. The maximum five scatters pay a very generous 50x your stake. These scatters can appear anywhere on the reels.
This slot is housed in a purple frame, while all the symbols on the reels have the same purple background. Either side of the reels you’ll find the nine win-line indicators. These are all bold primary colours. Win line one has another elaborate design. Each of the symbols is nicely designed, with the two characters standing out. The dancer adds an element of glamour to the reels and the friendly clown some humour. Some clowns can be scary, though this isn’t one of them! The addition of some animation might have made the visuals a little better.
The accompanying sound is one of the best features of the game. Between spins you’ll hear a rhythmic drum beat from the carnival, this being joined by the rousing hubbub of the crowd. More drums are added into the mix when the reels are spinning. Then the trumpet comes in when you land a win!
There are many slots out there today with a wide range of features and they certainly have their place. Carnaval takes a different approach however. Here you have a game where all the action is right there in front of you in the base game. With no features, you have no distractions, which makes for a high-speed game and offers up some very nice pay outs too. This game won’t be for all, but if you like it, you’ll really like it.
