Jungle Jim is an explorer who likes to mix it with the animals. The character is modelled somewhat on Indiana Jones, although this guy has a cheesy smile to go along with his hat. Joining Jim on the reels are an elderly explorer, a female companion and a variety of jungle animals. The animals look somewhat ferocious and include an alligator, a panther, a snake, a spider and strangely, a piranha.
The game is a relatively straightforward one – and does include a free spins bonus feature. However, before you earn your free spins you’ll have to take on a series of alligators in the water.
Jungle Jim is a five-reel slot with a total of 15 win-lines. The game pays from left to right and the biggest wins come when you land five in a row on a win line.
The game’s wild symbol shows a jungle setting with long grass jutting out over the front of the symbol with the silhouette of trees in the background. This will substitute for any other symbol apart from the bonus and the scatter. The wild is also the highest paying symbol in the game. Land five wilds in a row and your bankroll will be 4,000 coins better off.
Jungle Jim himself is the highest paying standard symbol, with a maximum win amount of 1,500 coins. He is followed by the elderly explorer complete with a monocle, worth 750 coins. The red-haired female assistant and the panther are next on the pay table and are worth 500 and 400 coins respectively. All of the symbols mentioned so far pay out when you land 2 or more in a row. All subsequent symbols will need at least 3 in a row for a win. These final symbols are the snake, the spider, the piranha and a flower.
The scatter symbol shows a bunch of tree trunks in a circular formation. Unusually, this scatter simply pays a straightforward cash win, instead of entry into a feature. Land 3 scatters and you’ll treble your bet size. Four scatters wins you 12x your bet, while the maximum five gives you a win amount of 75x your total bet.
The final symbol in the game is the bonus symbol. This shows an alligator, with the word ‘bonus’ written in red and orange above it. Like the scatter, you’ll win an immediate cash prize when landing 3, 4 or 5 on the reels. The pay outs are 5x, 20x and 50x your total bet respectively.
Three or more scatters will also see you gain entry into the free spins bonus round. However, unlike your standard free spins feature, you’ll win both the number of spins and the multiplier. To do this, you will be taken to a second screen showing five alligators in the water. You’ll now pick one of the five. Your first pick will determine your number of spins. The maximum number of spins that can be won is 10. You’ll now make a second pick and this will determine your multiplier. The multiplier ranges between 1x and 5x. Like any good pick-me round, you’ll also see the results of the ‘unpicked’ options.
While up to 10 free spins might seem a little on the low side, a potential 5x multiplier can make a huge difference to the feature. If you make the perfect picks of 10 spins and the 5x multiplier, there aren’t many features this good.
While the various creatures on the reels are indeed ferocious and seem ready to eat Jim at any point, the game has a fun look – though is showing some signs of old age. This is created by the cartoon style graphics which are in play throughout. These give Jim in particular a real cheesy look. Think ‘Buzz Lightyear meets Indiana Jones’ and you’re there.
There are plenty of on-theme sound effects. While you play you will hear ambient deep jungle noises – with more effects when you hit winning combinations.
Jungle Jim is one of those slots which has great short-term appeal. The graphics add an entertaining element to the game and you can’t help but smile the first time you see Jim. In terms of gameplay, there isn’t too much originality to set this game apart. A free spins round as the sole feature certainly isn’t anything new. Nevertheless, the pick me aspect of the feature is a nice touch and the multipliers can make for some big wins.
