The Indian movie industry is huge. This is estimated to be worth $2 billion per year, and creates megastars out of the lead actors. The size of this industry is second only to Hollywood, and it is this that caused the industry to be known as ‘Bollywood’.
This 5-reel video slot takes stars of the Indian screen and turns it into a solid and entertaining game. While you will not get the famous dance scenes, or indeed any movie clip, the music does feature – and the colors are bright verging on garish!
You’ll get wilds, scatters and a free spins round in this game – which has a wide range of bet sizes which will suit bankrolls big and small.
You’ll find a very regular 5-reel, 25-line video slot setup for this game. What is unusual is the huge range of bet sizes. You can spin for as little as 25c, or go all the way to $250 ($10 per line). There is an auto-play function, which is below and to the left of the spin button. This lets you choose from between 10 and 100 spins each time.
There are no individual stars, though the scenes you find on the symbols are instantly recognizable to Bollywood fans. There is a fight scene, with the protagonist a bigger gentleman with a mustache. A lady dancer in traditional silks features on another symbol, along with a dance scene involving the silhouettes of many dancers. Playing card symbols are in use, and these are decorated with film items. For example, the king comes with a clapper-board and the ace with an old-style camera.
The biggest prize symbol is the fight scene, this is worth 500 coins for 5 on a win-line, 100 coins for 4, 40 for 3 and 5 for just 2. Only this top symbol and the bottom one (the ten) pay from 2 of a kind, all the others require 3 from the left. The lady dancer in silks is next at 400 coins for 5, with a couple at 300, instruments and dancers at 200 – and then the playing card / film item combos paying the smaller wins.
A ‘Bollywood Bonanza’ logo is the wild symbol. This performs the usual role of substituting for other symbols – with only the scatters excluded. The wild also has the top single line prize. This is 750 coins for 5 of a kind. There are payments of 150 for 4, 50 for 3 and 10 for just 2. Keep in mind that you only get one win per line, and will be paid the biggest of these. For example, if you get 4 wilds and a dancing lady on a line, you’ll get 400 coins for that 5 of a kind, and not 150 for the 4 wilds.
Scatters are ‘House Full’ signs. These trigger the free spins game and also pay between 3x and 50x your total spin amount depending on how many you get in view.
While there are plenty of bright colors, the Bollywood style music is conspicuously absent during the base game. When you get 3 or more scatters in view on a single spin, you will get 8 free spins – and will hear that upbeat Indian music.
The free spins game is based on the same reels, though the background changes in addition to the music. You will see a counter for your spins above and to the left of the reels, and a total win box above and to the right. You can retrigger this free spins game with more scatter symbols.
I can’t help thinking that they could have done more with a colorful and vibrant theme like this. The clashing colors and generally lively feel is there alright – only it all comes over as a bit flat. The lack of animations is the main reason, with flashing boxes around the wins about all you get. The harp scale type sound when you spin during the base game also fails to bring those Bollywood scenes to life.
Symbols are nicely drawn, and are certainly different to the type of things you will find on most online slots. There is an opportunity here for a slot maker to really bring the Bollywood theme to life!
If you like solid slots with colorful themes, then why not give Bollywood Bonanza a try. This is not going to have you dancing along, or really give you a flavor of the intensity of these musical movies. At the same time, the free spins round and wild symbols could lead you to a profitable slot session!
