Slot sequels can be tricky. The challenge is to keep the elements which made the original popular, while creating something fresh with the theme. 888 Games has done a good job with this new version of their City Life slot. The Vegas Job keeps the characters which made up the wins from the original game – and adds some extra elements.
The first of these is that you can choose which direction your wins go in, or pay a little more and have them go both ways. There is also a free spins round. The bonus game, where you choose a character and then select items is still in use. One small touch I like is that the scruffy white dog which is on the side of the reels in the original game makes an appearance in version 2!
888 has kept the 20-win line setup for City Life 2. These win lines cross a standard 5 reel, 3 row grid. You can bet from just 1c a line, though the number of lines is non-adjustable. On the bottom right corner of the game, you will see a new element. This reads ‘2 ways to win fee’ and gives you the choice of wins from left to right (standard), right to left or both at the same time. If you choose both, this will cost you an extra 5 coins.
Your biggest wins will come via the 5 character symbols. Mr. Jobs (who looks very different from the creator of Apple) is the best paying symbol. 5 of a kind of the big boss will net you 2000 coins, with 500 for 4 and 50 for 3. Madame Loretta is next at 1000 coins. After that the Lara Croft look-alike Rona Heels us worth 450, the cop from the original now holds dynamite (35) and the rapper complete with giant key (200).
Once again there are no playing card symbols. Instead the smaller wins are made up by items which might be used in the ‘Vegas Job’. These are a red car, bag of money, handgun and dynamite.
You will find two types of wild in this game. The single wilds simply say ‘wild’. These will substitute for the regular symbols – though as usual not the bonus or scatter signs. Another wild says ‘3x wild’. This will multiply any wins that it helps to create by 3. They do not work together to make 9x multipliers.
Scatter symbols trigger the free spins game, and do not have a win of their own. You’ll get 10 free spins for 3, 20 for 4 and 30 for 5. The spins will stay in the same direction (or both ways) as the triggering spin, and will have the same coin size. Other than some background music, the spins are the same as the main game. You can trigger for more spins, or trigger the second screen bonus game from within this feature.
That second screen bonus game is trigged by 3 of the bonus symbols. There are two parts, a main picks game, and a pre-screen where you pick one of the characters. These are the same people you will see on the reels (same as in the original City Life Slot). If you are lucky, your character will come with a multiplier for your wins in the main part of the game!
This is a brighter design than the original, with a night-time view of Vegas behind the reels. These come to life with colored spotlights when you hit the free spins round. The symbols are different views of the familiar characters. These are all nicely drawn, and stay true to the originals – in both design and the character aspects.
When you win you’ll hear some guitar chops. There are also siren sound effects, and interesting pop-up messages. If you hit a 2-way win (you’ll need to enable the 2-ways and pay 5 coins more for this), then a message congratulates you for these – calling you a wise guy!
If you enjoyed City Life, then this sequel is a must-play. The characters from the first slot are back, the design is similar enough to be familiar – and there are some cool extras too. The double-direction play is certainly worthwhile. You’ll find a lot of right to left wins add to your bankroll over the spins. The 3x wild is always a welcome sight, and the free spins can compound the benefits of this. If you trigger the bonus, you’ll be picking your way to a potential Vegas windfall!
