The ‘host’ of this slot sits below the reels in his dressing gown, thermometer in his mouth. The ‘Doctor’s Orders’ from the title are to stay at home and get better! Luckily, this guy has an entertaining slot from 888 Games to keep him entertained. The symbols are pills, lemons and cups of tea.
Doctor’s Orders has a lot of features. These include a free spins bonus round where you get to pick the number of spins with different multipliers, a combo feature (which is progressive) and a picks bonus game too.
Like almost all of 888’s own slots, you’ll find that Doctor’s Orders has 5 reels, 3 rows of symbols on each reel and 25 win-lines. You can bet from 1c per line (25c) and up, and there is an auto-play option available.
I like the fact there are no filler (playing card) type symbols in this game. Instead you’ll find the high paying symbols have colored circles behind them, and the smaller prize symbols have no background.
The pile of pills is the highest paying symbol. This pays from 2 of a kind and up (the others all require at least 3 from the left). You’ll get 2500 coins for 5 of a kind, 750 coins for 4, 75 coins for 3 and 25 coins for 2. The thermometer comes next, this is worth 1000 coins for 5 of a kind. Cough syrup (with spoon!) and a hot water bottle complete the higher paying symbols.
For the lower prizes, the symbols all represent the home comforts which would be welcome when you are ill. There are slippers, a bowl of soup, honey, books and a lemon.
Wilds are represented by that ill-at-home classic – a hot cup of tea. This symbol does not have prizes of its own. Instead it will substitute for any of the regular symbols (though not the bonus or scatters).
As you play you will collect pills in a bowl (the ill guy below the reels is holding this). Symbols will be added when they are between 2 pill symbols. These can then be used later to create wins when substituting a symbol would create a winning combination. The number you collect will be remembered between spins.
There are two bonus features. 3 or more of the scatter symbols will give you an instant prize of up to 50x your total bet for the triggering spin. This will also trigger the free spins game. You get to choose 18 spins (with no multiplier), 9 spins with 2x for wins, 6 spins with 3x or just 3 spins with 6x on wins. The longer-term outcome will be the same, though you get to choose from the different volatility levels.
Three or more of the Nurse bonus symbols triggers a second screen picks game. This is very simple, and involves moving through screens picking items like medicine and food. You keep picking until you get a ‘game over’. Each successful pick adds a multiplier of your bet amount.
Most people will be able to relate to the design right away. We have all been the guy in the red dressing gown at some point in our lives. There is even a sympathetic looking cat on the left-hand side of the reels – with items like a toaster, radio and pot as the control buttons.
The reels are set in the windows of his apartment. On them you’ll find plain looking drawings, in the same cartoon style. There are a few small animations, with the main change in the graphics occurring during the picks game. Small details improve this slot. I like the way that the name of the slow above the reels has been created using pills and a nurses’ hat.
This is an entertaining slot, and for me one of the better efforts in 888’s range. The gentle humor is what makes it stand out. The sickness theme is handled in a way we can all sympathize with. One thing is for sure, a big win would perk up the spirits, and there are plenty of ways of making that happen. Free spins are the usual route. If you have a bit of ‘gamble’ in you, then you can take a big multiplier on just a few spins. There is also an entertaining picks game.
