In this 888 Games online slot, the fruit have faces. While the overall vibe is a fun Caribbean party, the fruit are certainly ‘freaky’. I’d go as far as to say that the orange looks positively sinister (though not deliberately!).
Under the hood you’ll find an older 9 win-line video slot. This has wilds, scatters and two different bonus games. One bonus sees you mixing a cocktail through up to 5 picks rounds. The other involves free spins – you can trigger up to 40 in one go.
9 win lines is on the low side these days. Most new slots have 30+ (or even use an all-ways system). This does mean that you are betting more per line for the same stake. The smallest spin amount is 45c, which Is 5c per line. Freaky Fruit uses a 5 reel by 3 rows setup.
There are no playing card or filler symbols for this game – it is all either fruit or cocktails.
The biggest line prize comes via a cherry in sunglasses. Hitting 5 of these on one of the 9 win-lines will get you 2500 coins, with 500 coins for 4, 75 coins for 3 and 10 coins for just 2. All the fruit symbols pay from 2 of a kind from the left. The peach (that looks half asleep) comes next, with a pear, cheerful looking pineapple, melon slice and smiling orange making up the rest of the bigger paying symbols.
It is hard to know exactly what the cocktails are. These make up the smaller wins and include one in a pineapple, a martini, orange one and a bright pink one.
Cherries with the word ‘Wild’ on them are a welcome sight on the reels of this 888 slot. This symbol is wild, and will substitute for any of the symbols above to make extra wins. Sometimes a single cherry will get you wins on more than one line. The cherries do not substitute for the special symbols (the bonus or scatters).
Mixed fruit symbols with the word ‘bonus’ can trigger the second screen picks game. You need to line up 3 or more of these on one of the win-lines. Usually, bonus symbols can be anywhere in view – so watch out for this. The bonus sees the reels disappear, and leaves you on a tropical island looking out over the beach. There are up to 5 rounds of picks, and each time you add to your cocktail. You start with a blender, then a shaker, then fruit and so on. The game continues each time until you hit a ‘game over’ sign – at which point your win is totaled and you return to the main reels.
The other bonus game is a free spins round. Other than some Caribbean party music, the reels stay the same as in the main game. You’ll need at least 3 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view to trigger this. The awards are 10 free spins for 3, 20 for 4 and 50 for 5 scatters.
Large reels have a very tropical backdrop. You can see the fringe of a grass roof above the reels, and some fruit piled to either side. A beach and glowing blue sea – with fluffy clouds in an otherwise blue sky – can be seen on the surround.
Fruits do have some character, with some of them looking daft and others more sinister! Overall the feeling is light-hearted, with the cocktails adding a nice angle to this. There are only growing / shrinking type animations. Even when you win, the fruits stay the same. When you spin, you’ll hear a calypso style tune, which continues if you hit a win.
Animations for the picks game are detailed, though the scene is fairly static. As you pick, a light / surround comes over each item. There is a sequence where each one is poured into your blender. This does show the age of the slot somewhat, though is not terrible!
Despite showing signs of old age, I enjoyed this slot. It is bright and upbeat in nature, and does have the potential for some bigger wins. The (wild) cherries made an appearance reasonably often, and the picks game comes up fairly regularly too. If you are lucky enough to trigger the 40 free spins (and maybe even retrigger for more) then you could end up winning big. Check out Freaky Fruit for yourself soon!
